Description

Huberantha cerasoides, formerly: ‘Polyalthia cerasoides’, also known as ‘Uvaria cerasoides’, belongs to the Annonaceae family. It is a medium-sized tree that can reach up to 20 meters in height; the straight trunk can be from 20 to 50 centimeters in diameter.

The bisexual, greenish and deliciously scented flowers are followed by bright red fruit clusters, edible in natura and very tasty.

Fun fact: the name ‘Polyalthia’ is derived from a combination of Greek words meaning: many cures; with reference to the medicinal properties of certain species.

Medicinal:
Used in traditional medicine.
Polyalthia cerasoides is used extensively in the traditional and folk system of medicine in Asian and African countries for its various pharmacological properties. An exhaustive literature search related to Polyalthia cerasoides noted that a large number of bioactive compounds enrich the stem bark and roots. Ethno-pharmacological scientific studies have proven that it has a wide range of biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, anticancer and antistress activities.

Habitat:
Tropical rainforest, savannas, edges of secondary forest, previously cleared forest with an open canopy, disturbed forest with a loose canopy, at altitudes from 100 to 1100 meters in Indochina.

Other Uses:
A fine, strong fiber is obtained from the inner bark and used to make rope and sacks.
The flowers are very fragrant and are often collected for essential oil.
The fine-grained, close-grained, hard, heavy yellowish wood is used for agricultural tools, general carpentry, boat building, and structural woods.
